Understanding the Tragic Loss: The Complexities of Adoption, Identity, and Mental Health

Joseph A. “Joey” Volm (2001-2003)

Joseph is the child Maria gave up for adoption when she was 18. Tragically, he died by suicide on August 6, 2023. While it’s difficult to fully understand the reasons behind his death, I can’t help but feel that Maria’s decisions played a role. Joseph might have had a better chance at life if he had been raised by his father or remained connected to his Navajo roots. Being sent away to live with strangers may have contributed to his struggles, but ultimately, these are just speculations. The truth is, we may never know all the factors that led to his untimely death.
